Osmian’s Enchantment and Ritual Trials
New Life as a Max Level ArchmageOsmian’s Enchantment and Ritual Trials are the decisive examination of Vivisari Vexaria’s qualifications to inherit Osmian’s magical legacy. The sequence shifts the value of magical mastery from raw power to appropriate understanding: Vivisari can perform spectacular high-tier magic with effortless authority, yet the trial reveals that even an extraordinary combat-mage may be a beginner when a discipline relies on ritual logic rather than personal mana and direct command. Her failure is therefore not a collapse of competence, but a precise exposure of the boundary between what she can overpower and what she can truly comprehend.
The Trial’s Design
Osmian presents the examination as a succession of practical demonstrations inside an environment shaped by enchantments, rituals, and illusion. His first assignment is an unfinished design of his own creation: Vivisari must complete it and use it to cross a mountain range, with a distant mountaintop serving as the finish line. The challenge is framed as simple, but it tests whether she can understand and control a pre-existing magical structure rather than merely unleash destructive force.
The staging room itself reinforces the trial’s unusual character. When Vivisari and Saffra are moved into a larger arena, the surroundings become a tropical island beneath a blue sky, while the changing environment follows them so seamlessly that the illusion resembles wilderness rather than a classroom. The setting is neither ordinary landscape nor purely abstract lesson. It is a constructed magical world in which every apparent space can become part of the examination, making Osmian’s craftsmanship as important as the tasks he assigns.
The Earthly Shackles Unbound Trial
Vivisari recognizes the first design as a form of flight magic and produces her own version of Fly, complete with bright white runes and personal modifications. Osmian reacts with astonishment because the supposedly grand design has become, in modern practice, an ordinary spell. His irritation at the loss of its former prestige is comic, but it also establishes the historical distance separating his magical achievements from the era in which Vivisari now lives.
Osmian nevertheless requires her to complete the exercise as prescribed. Vivisari demonstrates the spell’s control by floating upward and moving laterally with ease, then places it on Saffra and flies with her to the distant mountaintop. The task is perfunctory for Vivisari, but her performance confirms that she possesses the spellcasting competence Osmian expected. It also clarifies that his legacy was not principally that of a combat-mage. His importance lies in the systems and designs surrounding magic, including enchantments and rituals that can remain useful even when direct spellcasting has advanced beyond their original forms.
The Island Orbital Enchantment Trial
The next demand is more specialized. Osmian orders Vivisari to devise an enchantment that will make a boulder orbit the perimeter of the island, while allowing her to presume that an ongoing ritual supplies the energy. The problem therefore separates the design of the enchantment from the source of its power. Vivisari creates an orbital gravity enchantment, but Osmian adds a restriction that turns the exercise into preparation for the final examination: she may not use her own mana and must draw the required energy from the island’s flora.
This restriction forces Vivisari toward ritualism, the discipline in which she admits she is far less experienced. She approaches the task with unusual care, trying to construct a framework that will drain the island’s plants without killing the weakest specimens or extracting so much vitality that the ecosystem collapses over time. Her first, more structured work resembles traditional spellcasting and produces a design she considers sound. The conceptual stage is more difficult because a ritualist must actively direct captured energy through a process far less orderly than ordinary spellcasting.
Vivisari invokes the ritual and senses energy distributed across the island as pockets of green light. She narrows her grasp to the amount each plant can surrender, then makes the sacrifice. The island seems to groan as the surrounding life fades, although the plants do not die outright. She channels the resulting vital energy, which resembles mana but is fundamentally different, into the orbital enchantment. The boulder shudders, breaks free of gravity, and rises into the air, apparently proving that the design can function.
The result immediately becomes a failure when the boulder does not follow the intended orbit. Vivisari aborts the ritual rather than allow the uncontrolled working to continue. This is itself a demanding act: ordinary Dispel is inadequate for a ritual fueled by vital energy, so she invokes Dissolution with such authority that every person, plant, and mana current on the island freezes. The immense energies disperse in less than a second, vanishing like mist in sunlight before they can become a catastrophe.
Osmian’s Judgment
Osmian confirms that Vivisari has failed the ritual trial, but his criticism distinguishes between several kinds of ability. He praises her High Arcana as phenomenal, saying that he doubts he could have improved it himself except by adapting it more suitably to ritual form. Her weakness lies elsewhere: she has applied too much specificity, treating ritual directions as orders when rituals require suggestions. Her choice of sacrifice is also abysmal, although her control of the resulting energies is acceptable, if clumsy.
The judgment produces a sharp reversal. Vivisari’s overwhelming magical authority prevents disaster, yet it cannot convert a bad ritual premise into a successful one. Osmian therefore concludes that she is clearly inexperienced and a poor fit for his inheritance. Their specialties diverge too widely, and he determines that her interest in ritualism is only superficial. Vivisari is embarrassed by the failure, but she is also genuinely willing to learn, asking what sacrifice would have been better. The trial thus ends with rejection rather than mastery, while preserving the possibility that the encounter has supplied the most useful lesson she could have received.
Significance and Aftermath
The trials complicate the image of Vivisari as an almost limitless mage. Elsewhere, her power is so excessive that observers can mistake her for a god, especially after she tears a Greater Voidbeast apart with casual ease. In Osmian’s domain, however, power is not the sole measure of legitimacy. The old mage’s examination demands historical understanding, ecological restraint, conceptual flexibility, and respect for a discipline whose logic cannot be reduced to force.
The sequence also gives material form to the contrast between living inheritance and preserved knowledge. Osmian survives only through a decaying soul fragment and appears to have limited time remaining, while his trial room preserves sophisticated magical mechanisms long after the age that produced them. His designs endure, but their original meaning has shifted: a once-monumental flight construction has become Fly, and Vivisari’s modern competence makes the first test nearly trivial. The ritual trial reverses that relation. Ancient knowledge remains difficult not because it is simply stronger, but because it depends on assumptions Vivisari has not learned to inhabit.
Vivisari’s controlled use of Dissolution is the event’s final measure of her character. She cannot complete the ritual, but she refuses to let failure become destruction. The failed orbit, the fading island life, and the sudden dispersal of dangerous energy expose the cost of treating nature as a power source; her intervention limits that cost even as Osmian condemns the underlying design. Osmian’s Enchantment and Ritual Trials therefore leave Vivisari without the inheritance she sought, but with a clearer map of her own abilities: supreme in direct spellcraft, formidable in enchantment, and insufficiently trained in ritualism’s negotiated relationship with life, energy, and intention.
